Canon, a world leader in digital imaging, has introduced two new additions to their range of ultra wide-angle lenses for their EOS DSLR cameras. The EF-S10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM and the EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM were created to greatly enhance the EOS experience for photographers ranging from beginners to professional.
The EF-S10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM rounds off the EF-S line up of lenses for entry-level users, as it supplements the existing EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM to provide coverage from ultra wide-angle through to telephoto. The EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM is the latest entry into Canon’s professional L series of lenses, and is the first L series wide-angle lens to come with an Image Stabilizer.
“Canon prides itself in empowering photographers with the right tools, casual or professional alike, to capture nothing short of the best pictures. The EF-S10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM and the EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM completes their arsenal in capturing landscapes creatively, and in a variety of ways,” said Edwin Teoh, Assistant Director for Consumer Business Marketing, Canon Singapore.
EF-S10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM
The EF-S10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM is a must-have lens for entry-level users, with a range equivalent to 16-29mm zoom (35mm equivalent), the lens is capable of taking great landscape photos, and its exaggerated perspective can also be creatively used to take some highly dramatic pictures that cannot be recreated with other types of lenses. Together with the everyday EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and the telephoto EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM, a casual user will be able to take photos in all kinds of situations to maximize the effectiveness of the EOS system.
The superb image quality comes from the use of aspheric lenses and a UD lens, which provides consistently sharp details and focus from the central viewing area to the peripheral areas. These materials have also resulted in a compact lens, approximately 20 percent smaller and 38 percent lighter than the existing EF-S10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens and even shorter in length than the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM kit lens. Casual users who do not want to carry a lot of equipment will be pleased with this lens’ compact portability.
The Stepping Motor mechanism (STM) component ensures fast and accurate focusing when taking still images and during focus shift in video mode, without any unwanted audio due to its virtually silent auto-focusing system. A built-in image stabilization mechanism keeps photos sharp, with an effect equivalent to using a shutter speed 4 steps faster*. This lens’ IS is also intelligent enough to differentiate between normal shooting and panning movements, and will switch to the most appropriate mode for a sharp photo.
EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM
For users who want the very best, the EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM provides the highest image quality amongst the class of luxury lenses, and even matches that of the EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM. The lens is constructed from 16 elements including 3 Glass-Molded aspheric lenses and two UD lenses. The aspheric lenses significantly reduce any distortion, so that details in the peripheral area look just as good as the subject in the middle. Two UD lenses also minimize chromatic difference, preserving more realistic color tones. A 9-blade circular aperture also brings up the image quality by providing almost-round shapes when shooting with a bokeh effect.
Fans have long been asking for a lens in this range with image stabilization, so Canon has equipped the EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM with exactly that. With IS active, the lens offers a 4-stop* light advantage for shake correction, allowing it to be used when tripods are not available, in challenging lighting situations, or shooting in locations where flash photography is forbidden.
As this lens belongs in the prestigious L series of lenses, it has been produced with extremely high durability and toughness for reliable usage. The lens mount, switch panel, zoom ring and focusing ring have all been constructed with a dust-proof and drip-proof structure, allowing it to be used in harsh conditions. The surface of the lens elements have been coated with fluorine, which easily repels water and oil so that they can be easily wiped off with a dry cloth.
