Equinix has signed a new renewable energy power purchase agreement (PPA) in Singapore with Flo Energy Singapore, as data centre operators face growing pressure to secure low-carbon power amid rising demand from AI and digital services.
Under the agreement, the solar PPA is expected to deliver at least 11.5 megawatt peak (MWp) of renewable energy capacity sourced from industrial and commercial rooftop solar installations across Singapore. Equinix said the deal also includes an option to expand capacity to up to 50MWp over time.
Equinix said the agreement is its fourth PPA in Singapore in the past two years and is intended to support the country’s Green Plan 2030. The company said the latest deal would lift its local renewable energy portfolio to a cumulative 215MWp by 2028, with the set of agreements expected to generate about 250,000 MWh of electricity per year.
“Singapore’s position as a trusted global AI and Digital Hub will be underpinned by digital infrastructure that is resilient, sustainable and built for the future,” said Yee May Leong, Managing Director, Singapore, Equinix. “Our fourth PPA is a significant milestone that reflects the power of collaboration across Singapore’s public and private sectors. As demand for digital infrastructure continues to accelerate, Equinix remains committed to supporting Singapore’s position as a global digital hub while advancing the nation’s sustainability goals.”
Equinix said the Flo agreement broadens its renewable energy sourcing strategy in Singapore by increasing participation from private-sector renewable providers, and complements its existing agreements and national initiatives including SolarNova 7 and JTC Jurong Island.
According to Soon Chen Kang, Senior Research Analyst at 451 Research, S&P Global Market Intelligence, Singapore’s data centre sector is moving into a phase where energy availability and sustainability are becoming more strategic. “Equinix’s latest agreement highlights how operators are diversifying their renewable energy sourcing models and collaborating with a wider ecosystem of partners,” he said.
Flo chief executive Matthijs Guichelaar said the deal aggregates generation from commercial and industrial rooftop solar projects to help businesses access renewable energy in a land-constrained market.
Equinix said it is the first customer secured under Flo’s newly launched Data Centre Solutions, which it said is also available to data centre operators in Australia through Flo’s local business. The company said the offering includes products such as fixed-price contracts, progressive purchasing, structured derivatives, Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) matching and PPAs.
Beyond the PPA, Equinix said it has recently announced a multi-year funding program of more than S$9 million to support research into alternative clean energy sources including geothermal energy and small modular reactors, and has contributed S$450,000 to Singapore Management University’s ResWORK program. It also said it plans to establish a Co-Innovation Facility with the National University of Singapore in an upcoming Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX), SG6, focused on technologies such as fuel cells, battery energy storage, liquid cooling and digital twin capabilities.
Equinix said it has more than 1,490 MW of wind and solar PPAs under contract across 11 countries, including Australia, India, Japan and Singapore.
