Equinix has announced plans to expand its presence in Malaysia with a new data centre, KL2, in Kuala Lumpur, with a total investment of more than US$190 million and capacity for more than 2,200 cabinets when fully built out.
The new facility is planned for Cyberjaya and is slated to be built less than one kilometre from Equinix’s existing metropolitan site, KL1. Equinix said KL2 will be its fourth data centre in Malaysia, adding to its Kuala Lumpur site and ongoing investments in Johor (JH1 and the upcoming JH2).
Equinix said the expansion is intended to address demand for scalable, low-latency and interconnected digital infrastructure supporting cloud, AI and enterprise workloads in the region. The company said the facility will provide a platform for mission-critical workloads once operational and support organisations deploying distributed AI and hybrid multi-cloud architectures across ASEAN.
The announcement comes as Malaysia positions itself as a regional hub for digital and AI development, driven in part by government initiatives including the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO) and MyDIGITAL.
Cheam Tat Inn, Managing Director, Malaysia, Equinix, said, “This expansion marks an important milestone in our journey to elevate Malaysia’s digital economy. By providing AI-ready infrastructure in Kuala Lumpur and Johor responsibly, we are directly supporting national agendas to advance the country’s AI ambitions. KL2 will not only enable businesses to process data closer to the source and deploy Distributed AI with agility, but it will also drive high-value job creation and build long-term economic resilience for the nation.”
Equinix said KL2 will be integrated into its global network and interconnected with its footprint across Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Singapore via Equinix Fabric. The company said customers will be able to use Fabric Intelligence for network observability and AI-driven insights to optimise routing and bandwidth.
In a list of project highlights, Equinix said KL2 is being designed to support a mix of customers, from retail enterprise deployments to large footprint deployments and high-density workloads. It said a substantial portion of capacity is planned to support liquid cooling for AI and high-performance computing.
Equinix said it has secured adjacent land for potential future expansion and that KL2 is expected to achieve strong operational efficiency. It also said the facility is targeting 100% renewable energy coverage “from day 1”, aligning with its stated goal to achieve 100% renewable energy coverage across its retail IBX footprint by 2030.
Globally, Equinix said it operates more than 280 data centres across 77 markets in 36 countries and serves more than 10,500 businesses. In Asia-Pacific, it said its portfolio includes 65 data centres across Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.
