In Asia Pacific* for the first quarter of 2018, Android ransomware is the cyber threat which has increased the most, rising by 1173% compared to Q4 2017, while machine learning anomaly detections also rose considerably, by 480%, according to Malwarebytes’ latest report on Cybercrime tactics and techniques.
Furthermore, while spyware detections in Asia Pacific fell by 33%, this form of malware saw the biggest increase globally (56%), emerging as the number 1 detection for businesses in the first quarter of 2018. Cryptomining malware detections might have fallen in this region (-51%), but it saw a global increase (27%) as well. Meanwhile, ransomware detections globally and in this region increased at the same rate (28%), while the proportion of increase in adware detections globally (14%) was higher than in Asia (5%).
This global increasing trend of spyware detections has been spearheaded by TrickBot, a malware which includes a cryptocurrency miner code, giving spyware creators a slice of the lucrative malicious cryptomining pie. As they look to leverage the computing power of as many devices as possible, the threat posed by TrickBot to both small and large organizations globally and even in this region is more dangerous than ever, especially with more businesses having their employees’ personal mobile devices connected to the company network.
Such unmanaged cryptominers on employees’ mobile devices could seriously disrupt business or infrastructure-critical processes by overloading systems to the point where they become unresponsive and shut down. With such an ever-evolving cyber threat landscape, the need for a simple yet effective defence against increasingly sophisticated malware and especially malicious cryptominers is more important than ever before.
Malwarebytes has the very answer for this type of threat, with the release of Malwarebytes Endpoint Protection and Response (EPR). This Endpoint Detection and Protection solution is perfect for smaller and mid-market sized enterprises in Australia and New Zealand, which are overwhelmed by existing complex solutions, as well as multi-national corporations that want a checkbox EDR option.
With most companies lacking the resources and capabilities to accurately monitor and respond to today’s cyber threats, Malwarebytes EPR allows organisations to proactively hunt for malware across all of their endpoints without the need for a dedicated resource.
As such, Malwarebytes Endpoint Protection and Response is the only EDR solution that provides:
- multi-layered protection incorporating signature-based and signature-less technologies
- a proprietary Linking Engine Technology achieving complete and thorough remediation
- ease of deployment and management with remediation from a single console
- elimination of EDR complexity with three modes of endpoint isolation, automated remediation, and Ransomware Rollback up to 48 hours.
Marcin Kleczynski, CEO of Malwarebytes comments: “Many businesses don’t have the resources to bring on dedicated, highly-specialized EDR technology and talent, leaving them with a tool that simply adds to a long queue of alerts, without fixing the underlying problems. Malwarebytes Endpoint Protection and Response provides proven endpoint protection with integrated detection and response capabilities via a single agent, so organizations of all sizes can easily protect their endpoints from targeted attacks, thoroughly remediate systems and rollback ransomware.”

“Understanding how Malware got onto a machine, where else it has spread in an organisation’s network and removing it efficiently is becoming critical to most Australian and New Zealand businesses no matter what size they are. Malwarebytes Endpoint Protection and Response offering is designed to simplify this process for businesses that don’t have the luxury of a dedicated Malware Analysis team. We do this using an easy to manage dashboard allowing administrators to run a variety of scans and reports as well as isolate the infected devices from the network and even roll back machines that have been locked by ransomware.”
